Sentencing postponed for Mich. teen who admitted to stabbing mother

ASSOCIATED PRESS

11:25 p.m. March 6, 2006

PONTIAC, Mich. – Sentencing for a 16-year-old boy who admitted stabbing his mother 111 times was postponed Monday after a judge expressed reservations about the teen's deal with prosecutors.

Christopher Dankovich pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and agreed to serve 22½ to 34 years in prison.

Had he been convicted of first-degree murder, Dankovich would have faced a mandatory life term.

Judge John McDonald said Monday he was not convinced that Dankovich would not be a threat to society after his release.

McDonald said he wanted to review information on whether Dankovich was competent to stand trial. He ordered the defense to provide more information from the teen's forensic psychological examination.

Dankovich was 15 when his mother, Diane Michele, 50, was found dead last spring in her home in Rochester Hills, just north of Detroit. The teen was arrested later that day at his family's cabin in St. Helen, more than 100 miles away.

Sentencing is to resume March 13.
